The History of 5 Card Stud Poker

The history of poker is long and indistinct. Many people say that poker was originated from Persia as it somewhat resembles a game called As Nas and was brought to the United States by Persian sailors in New Orleans. The game was then played with 25 cards and with 5 different suits. The game somewhat matched the modern Five Card Stud with many of the hand combinations like three of a kind. The term ‘Poker’ descended from the French poque, which was originally taken from German pochen, ‘to knock’.

In late 1820’s the game was said to be played in New Orleans with 20 cards deck. All a player needs to do was to bet on the value of their hands. The earliest form of poker is known to be a 20-card pack (A-K-Q-J-10) evenly dealt amongst four players.

A new card combination called flush was introduced soon after the card deck was expanded to 52 cards. More new cards were introduced to allow more then 4 people to play the game at the same time. Pokers was then played with only one round of betting with all five cards dealt face down and no draw cards, as somewhat like modern Five Card Stud game.

In order to make the game more profitable, a few of the games rules were changed by the professionals. Many other features of modern poker such as the draw and some versions of different hands, as well as the straight and the flush were developed from a early British game Brag or Bragg.
