Derivations of Blackjack

Blackjack is considered as one of the top most played casino game in recent years both in offline casinos as well as online. Now let’s turn our attention back and look into its history of Blackjack.

The Italians in the 16th century had several variations of blackjack like “Sette e mezzo” or “seven-and-a-half.” The game required a deck of cards of 7 or bigger value where each face card were worth one point and 9s and under were worth a 1/2-point. The king of diamonds was considered as a wild card.

During the 16th Century in France, “vingt et un” was another well accepted games amongst gamblers of those times. The rules of this game was also most similar to those of today’s Blackjack where players needed to bet after every card and only the deal was allowed to double down.

With the Western European immigration throughout 18th to 19th century, diverse kinds of twenty-one were introduced in the United States. However, in 1931, gambling was prohibited but the integration of lawful gambling in Las Vegas made gambling and Blackjack quite famous amongst the people in the US. Many people still believe that the term “blackjack” was coined in America due to the fact that as gaming houses normally provided 10-1 odds on a hand of ace of spades with a black jack while others believe that the “black jack” hand paid out at higher odds in the French game as well.
